On Saturday, skydivers at Skydive Edmonton West near Onoway participated in an event to honor the first World Skydiving Day, joining jumpers worldwide in an attempt to set a record for the most jumps in a single day. “I think we’ll get about 80 people up,” said Jason Cameron, operations manager of Skydive Edmonton West. “Some of us will get up multiple times.” The event saw a mix of amateur and seasoned jumpers, all eager to contribute to the global tally. Notably, one skydiver even flew in from England just for the occasion. “She jumped here last year, and then we told her about World Skydiving Day, so she booked her vacation to be here today,” Cameron added.
The day was also marked by the participation of many first-time jumpers who added to the tally with tandem jumps, strapped in with an experienced instructor. “That was exhilarating. I have never experienced anything like that,” said Lincoln Ho, a first-time jumper. “It wasn’t scary at all. It was a complete thrill.” Another first-time skydiver, Lily Sim, shared a similar sentiment. “Never thought I’d do it in my life, but it was really good. Everybody should try it.” The enthusiasm and excitement of the new jumpers added to the day’s vibrant atmosphere, showcasing the appeal and accessibility of skydiving to newcomers.
For those who weren’t quite ready to take the plunge, the event also welcomed spectators, offering them a chance to learn more about the sport. “Especially people that are concerned about the safety aspect or things like that, they can come see what it’s all about. We love having spectators,” Cameron said. The open invitation to watch and learn helped demystify the sport for many, encouraging a new wave of potential future skydivers. As World Skydiving Day continues to grow, it promises to be a significant annual event, celebrated on the second Saturday in July each year, drawing skydiving enthusiasts from around the globe to participate in this thrilling endeavor.
