Margaret River Braces for the Ultimate Surf Showdown at the 2024 WA Surf Masters Championships

The picturesque shores of Margaret River are set to become the epicenter of surf action as the 2024 West Coast Suspensions WA Surf Masters Championships, presented by Think Mental Health, kicks off on Friday. This event is more than just a competition; it’s a celebration of surfing heritage and the future of the sport. Surfing veterans and young prodigies will go head-to-head in a thrilling shortboard contest across 12 divisions, ensuring non-stop excitement for spectators and participants alike.

Gateway to National Glory

This championship isn’t just about local bragging rights. As the gateway to the Australian Surfing Championships, it offers surfers the opportunity to secure their place among the country’s elite wave riders. Representing Western Australia, these surfers will compete against the nation’s best later this year, making this event a crucial stepping stone in their surfing careers.

Pathway to the Pro Circuit

Thanks to the Think Mental Health Pathway to the Pro initiative, the stakes are even higher for competitors. The champions of the Open Men’s and Open Women’s divisions will earn coveted spots in the Think Mental Health WA Local Trials. Success here can lead to participation in the prestigious World Surf League Margaret River Pro in April, a dream for many surfers aiming to make their mark on the global stage.

Surfing Legends and Future Stars

Justin Majeks, Surfing WA Events Manager, expressed excitement about the diverse lineup of competitors: “It’s going to be really cool to see multiple generations of WA surfers competing alongside each other. This event will bring together WA surfing pioneers, as well as the young talent that will push our sport forward long into the future.”

Among the returning champions are Finn Cox (Margaret River) and Claire Bevilacqua (Yallingup), who will be defending their Open Men’s and Women’s State Titles from 2023. They will be joined by a strong contingent of surfers from the south-west, all eager to claim victory.

State-Wide Talent Showcase

Competitors from all over Western Australia, from Geraldton in the north to Esperance in the south, are set to converge on Margaret River. The divisions range from Under-21s to Over-65s, highlighting the wide appeal and inclusive nature of the sport. This broad participation ensures a rich display of skill and passion across all age groups.

Challenging Conditions Ahead

The forecast promises challenging conditions and powerful waves, setting the stage for a memorable event. Gas Bay is the likely location for the three days of competition, offering the perfect backdrop for this surf spectacle. With heats beginning at 7:30am on Friday and finals scheduled for Sunday, every moment promises to be a thrilling display of surfing prowess.
