U.S. Paralympics Nordic Skiing Announces 2024-25 National Team Roster with Promising New Talent
COLORADO SPRINGS, COLORADO – U.S. Paralympics Nordic Skiing has unveiled the seven athletes selected for its 2024-25 national team roster. Additionally, four athletes, including three newcomers, have secured spots on the team’s development roster.
Following a successful 2023-24 season where Team USA’s Para Nordic skiers won eight medals at the 2024 IBU Para Biathlon World Championships, the athletes are gearing up for a full slate of competitions in the 2024-25 campaign as they prepare for the Paralympic Winter Games in Milan Cortina 2026.
“We have so many incredible veterans of the sport on this team, and we will be looking to them to lead the way for some of our up-and-coming athletes as we approach another Games,” said Eileen Carey, director of U.S. Paralympics Nordic Skiing. “As a program, we are excited about the depth of talent and work ethic within this group of individuals.”
Returning to the National A team are dual-sport Paralympic medalists Oksana Masters (Louisville, Kentucky) and Kendall Gretsch (Downers Grove, Illinois), who together accounted for seven of the team’s eight biathlon world championship medals in March. Masters, a 17-time Paralympic medalist and the most decorated U.S. Winter Paralympian, is currently aiming for a spot in the summer Paralympic Games in cycling. Gretsch, the reigning paratriathlon Paralympic gold medalist, is also heading to Paris for her summer sport. Masters and Gretsch previously won the first-ever biathlon world championship team sprint in Prince George.
Paralympic medalists Jake Adicoff (Sun Valley, Idaho) and Sydney Peterson (Lake Elmo, Minnesota) also earned spots on the National A team. Both are cross-country skiing specialists and Paralympic champions from Beijing. They both reached the podium at the most recent FIS Para Nordic Skiing World Championships in Sweden. Adicoff also claimed the men’s visually impaired cross-country overall world cup title last season.
World champion Aaron Pike (Park Rapids, Minnesota) qualified for Paris after an outstanding performance at the 2023 TCS New York City Marathon, where he became one of the first four Para athletes to qualify for Team USA. Pike, who won a bronze medal in biathlon sprint pursuit in March, will be competing in his seventh Paralympic Games this summer.
Paralympians Dan Cnossen (Topeka, Kansas) and Dani Aravich (Boise, Idaho) return to the National C team. Cnossen, a seven-time Paralympic medalist, is aiming for his fourth Paralympic Games in Milan Cortina. Aravich, who has competed in both the Summer and Winter Paralympic Games in track and field and Nordic skiing, respectively, is seeking her third berth.
Paralympian Max Nelson (Mahtomedi, Minnesota) leads a group of four athletes named to the 2024-25 development team. This marks the first roster inclusion for sit skiers Nicole Zaino (Brookfield, Connecticut) and Michael Kneeland (Bozeman, Montana), and standing skier Jack Berry (Missoula, Montana).

Men’s Slalom Team Gears Up for New Season with Revamped Coaching Staff
Following their history-making exploits last season, the Men’s Slalom team of Billy Major, Dave Ryding, and Laurie Taylor lead the charge as the World Cup Squad, supported by a refreshed coaching and support team that features former Olympian and World Cup racer Alain Baxter alongside longstanding team member Jai Geyer, and TJ Baldwin who joins the team for the coming season in coaching and support roles.
The team, who finished sixth in the Slalom Nations Cup standings in 2023/24, enter the season in fine shape, looking to build on a number of historic results and personal bests over the past twelve months.
A 12-athlete Europa Cup Squad sees four new faces with Abi Bruce and Molly Butler both promoted from the FIS Squad, and Freddy Carrick-Smith and Zak Carrick-Smith both also selected, joining their brother Luca, with Freddy and Zak the youngest athletes in the British EC Squad set-up. Joining them are 2023/24 NorAm Slalom Cup champion Victoria Palla, alongside Reece Bell, Ed Guigonnet, Robert Holmes, Jack Irving, Calum Langmuir, and Owen Vinter.
The FIS Squad boasts 26 athletes, including George Brown, Lewis Parton, Ryan Pye, Toby Stephen, and Dante Adam Vidri all making their selection debut.
The World Cup Squad are first slated for action at the Levi Slalom World Cup in Levi, Finland, on 16-17 November, with pre-season training already underway.

Blind Climber Jesse Dufton Makes Historic Ascent of Devils Tower
Jesse Dufton, a 38-year-old blind climber, has made an incredible ascent of Wyoming’s Devils Tower, climbing the 500-foot El Matador route and becoming the first blind person to lead this challenging formation. Dufton, widely regarded as the world’s best blind climber, is a purist when it comes to climbing gear and has an impressive track record. By April last year, he had climbed over 1,500 routes unsighted across the British Isles.
Born with rod-cone dystrophy, a degenerative genetic condition, Dufton’s vision deteriorated from poor to legally blind by his early 20s. Despite this, his passion for climbing, ignited at the age of 11, has never waned. He has tackled hundreds of traditional routes, completed difficult sport climbs, and achieved alpine-style first ascents in Greenland. Notably, last year, he became the first blind person to make the first ascent of a challenging multi-pitch route, “Eye Disappear,” in Morocco.
Dufton learned about Devils Tower only a few years ago after attending a talk by French climber Catherine Destivelle, who soloed El Matador in 1992. Inspired by the unique rock formation, which reminded him of some UK crags like Fairhead and Kilt Rock, Dufton was drawn to the challenge and the opportunity it presented.
Dufton’s remarkable achievements continue to inspire and demonstrate that with determination and passion, even the most daunting obstacles can be overcome. His ascent of El Matador is a testament to his extraordinary skill and tenacity in the face of adversity.

Pietro Vidi, a 21-year-old prodigy from Italy, has firmly established himself among the upper echelons of the bouldering world with his latest ascent of “Fuck the System,” an imposing 8C+ grade problem. Located in Fionnay, Switzerland, “Fuck the System” is a significant challenge that represents the sit start to Dave Graham’s renowned “Foundation’s Edge” (8C), which was first completed by Shawn Raboutou in 2021. Vidi had previously attempted “Foundation’s Edge” last summer but struggled with the intricate kneebar crux. Undeterred, he dedicated a season in Bavona under the mentorship of Dave Graham himself, focusing on refining his technical skills and mental fortitude.
Upon returning to Fionnay, Vidi quickly unlocked the crucial knee sequence, despite the added difficulty caused by a slightly crumbling foothold. Overcoming multiple setbacks during the ascent, including challenging weather conditions, Vidi described the climb as a “real battle,” pushing himself to the limit. At one point, he found himself on the verge of giving up, only to summon the resolve to envision success and persevere through sheer determination.
Reflecting on his accomplishment, Vidi acknowledges that his first 8C+ ascent marks a significant milestone in his climbing career, yet he remains hungry for more challenges ahead. His journey underscores not only his technical prowess but also his unwavering commitment to pushing boundaries in the sport of bouldering. Three-Year-Old Darlia Conquers Three Peaks Challenge, Raising Over £1,500 for Charity
Three-year-old Darlia from Peakirk, Peterborough, has achieved an incredible feat by completing the Three Peaks Challenge, making her one of the youngest individuals to accomplish this demanding hike. The challenge involves scaling the highest peaks in England, Scotland, and Wales, which Darlia managed to conquer over several weekends, completing the task in about 30 days.
Darlia, one of six sisters, embarked on this adventure with her supportive family. Her mother, older sister (aged 14), and younger sister (aged 18 months), who was carried by their father, James, joined her on the hikes. Together, they aimed to not only reach the summits but also raise funds for The Outward Bound Trust, a charity dedicated to inspiring young people to engage in outdoor adventures. Their efforts were immensely successful, raising more than £1,500 for the cause.
The journey began with Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) at the end of April, followed by Scafell Pike on May 11, and culminating with Ben Nevis on May 26. James shared that Darlia’s enthusiasm was evident, as she “virtually ran up Snowdon and bounced her way back down,” motivated by the promise of an ice cream reward for her hard work. This determination and boundless energy were key to her success.
James expressed immense pride in his daughter’s achievement, highlighting the importance of outdoor activities for children. “I am so proud of her,” he said. “She is full of energy, and we were looking for ways to tire her out. As parents, we believe children should be getting outdoors as much as possible as it is great for both physical and mental health, and taking on a challenge like this will teach them a level of determination.”
The family, who frequently walk in the Peak District, did not undertake any specific training for the challenge, relying instead on their regular outdoor activities to prepare them. Their experience underscores a powerful message: embracing nature and outdoor challenges can be a transformative and inspiring experience for children.
By choosing to raise money for The Outward Bound Trust, Darlia and her family hope to encourage more young people to learn about the joys and benefits of outdoor adventures. Wheelchair Adventurer to Make Second Attempt at Climbing Yr Wyddfa Unaided
A wheelchair adventurer said he would make a new bid to climb Yr Wyddfa, also known as Snowdon, unaided after coming “frustratingly close” in his first attempt.
Nick Wilson, from Towcester, Northamptonshire, spent 14 years in the Army before he suffered a spinal injury.
During his first attempt at the challenge, on 4 June, the steering on his specially engineered mobility chair snapped more than three quarters of the way into climbing the Welsh peak, which is 1,085 metres (3,560 ft) above sea level.
Mr Wilson said he was now plotting to try again next month “to show people it can be done”.
He said the challenge aimed to raise greater awareness of accessibility issues faced by wheelchair users.
“We set out to show how inclusive design and engineering can make the world more accessible for everyone, everywhere,” said Mr Wilson.
“I’m not ashamed to say [I cried] when the steering snapped. It was so frustratingly close. We know it can be done, we did over 85% unaided.”
He said it would still have been possible to scale the mountain with help from his support team, but decided against continuing to try again and maintain the “integrity” of the challenge.

TrialGP Italy: Bou Dominates, Busto Triumphs in Slippery Showdown
Repsol Honda’s Toni Bou and GasGas Factory rider Jaime Busto showcased their skills at the TrialGP of Italy in Valsassina on June 15-16. Despite challenging early rain that intensified the difficulty, Bou took an early lead after the first lap with 22 points riding the Montesa Cota 4RT. By the second lap, with improved weather conditions, Bou delivered a near-flawless performance, securing his fifth consecutive victory of the season. Following closely behind were Matteo Grattarola on the factory Beta in second place, Bou’s teammate Gabriel Marcelli in third, with Sherco’s Adam Raga and Jaime Busto also delivering strong performances.
Sunday marked the emergence of a new winner as Jaime Busto excelled in slippery conditions, clinching the day’s victory over Toni Bou by four points. Matteo Grattarola secured third place, followed by Adam Raga and Gabriel Marcelli.
“It’s an incredible feeling being back on the top of the podium,” Busto remarked after Sunday’s win. “I made some mistakes, but I focused on minimizing errors and it paid off.”
Despite the setback, Bou remained optimistic, saying, “Today was not our day…but the best thing is to finish second when things are not going well.”
With three rounds completed, Bou maintains a comfortable lead in the Championship standings with 117 points, ahead of Busto with 90 points in second place. Adam Raga holds third place with 81 points.
