Ella McCaffray arrived at Nias this year with a determined spirit, having previously secured runner-up positions in both the Pro Junior and QS categories. Throughout the competition, her seasoned expertise and comfort in these challenging waves shone brightly, culminating in a standout performance during the Final against Australia’s Oceanna Rogers.
McCaffray’s mastery of the conditions was evident as she executed flawless maneuvers, opening with a 7.33 for precise turns and later scoring an impressive 8.83 for one of the best tubes of the event. Her commanding two-wave total of 16.16 left Rogers in a combination situation, despite the latter’s valiant effort with an 8.17 on powerful backside snaps.
Reflecting on her achievement, McCaffray expressed her elation: “I’m so stoked to win at my favorite wave in the world. This has been one of the best events ever with firing waves every day, barrels after barrels. I’m grateful to compete here among such talented surfers.”
While McCaffray claimed the victory, Oceanna Rogers’s remarkable performance marked a significant milestone in her career, setting a promising path towards Challenger Series qualification in 2025.
The event also saw Josh Kerr supporting his daughter, Sierra Kerr, as she gained valuable experience in the QS amid Indonesia’s perfect, hollow waves. Kerr, initially joining to enjoy the empty waves, found himself pleasantly surprised by his competitive success, narrowly missing out on a win. Sierra’s standout performances showcased her potential, ending with a semifinal loss to Rogers, preventing a dream father-daughter podium finish.
Reflecting on the experience, Kerr remarked, “Surfing these waves with a competitive mindset alongside Sierra has been incredible. It’s reignited my passion for competitive surfing and made for a memorable event.”
The Nias event not only celebrated triumphs but also reaffirmed the thrill and camaraderie of competitive surfing amidst exceptional conditions.
