World Cup Skier and Girlfriend Die After 2,300ft Fall from Italian Mountain Peak
World Cup Skier Jean Daniel Pession, 28, and Elisa Arlian, 26, tragically fell in a mountain accident in Italy, according to local reports. Mr. Pession was a member of the Italian national speed skiing team, and Ms. Arlian was an instructor and school teacher.
The couple had reached the summit of Mount Zerbion after hiking from the resort village of Champoluc in the Aosta Valley. Despite their familiarity with the peak, an alarm was raised when they failed to return later in the day, as reported by Italy’s Rai.
Alpine rescuers, police, and firefighters initiated a search using helicopters. Initially, no signs of their fall were found. After several hours, rescuers were able to locate them using a mobile phone signal.
Jean Daniel Pession, 28, and Elisa Arlian, 26, were found dead with their bodies still tied together, a common practice among mountain climbers, after a tragic fall in Italy. Alberto Bertin, the regional council president for Aosta Valley, called the incident a “moment of profound sadness,” noting that “two young lives [were] destroyed by an accident on a mountain, that mountain which was their passion.”
Mr. Pession, a member of the Italian national speed skiing team, competed in the 2021 Ski World Cup, where he placed 15th, and finished 22nd in the speed skiing competition at the 2022 World Championships.
The Italian Winter Sports Federation confirmed the deaths in a statement, expressing that “a terrible tragedy strikes the world of winter sports and speed skiing in particular. Jean Daniel Pession, a 28-year-old member of the World Cup team, lost his life in a tragic mountain accident above Champoluc. His girlfriend also died together with Pession.” The statement highlighted Pession’s notable career achievements, including his 15th place finish in the final World Cup ranking in 2021 and his 22nd place finish at the World Championships in Vars in 2022.
