LOS ANGELES — Yuka Saso, with a powerful left fist pump and a triumphant smile, clinched her second U.S. Women’s Open championship, paying tribute to both her Japanese father and Philippine mother. This victory cements her status as a rising star in the world of golf.
Overcoming Challenges on the Course
Despite a rocky start with a double bogey on the sixth hole, Saso displayed remarkable resilience. She focused on the sage advice of her father, Masakazu, who emphasized the importance of staying cool under pressure. His words proved pivotal: “It’s better to stay cool while playing. That’s the only thing you’re lacking. In terms of technique, you’re not inferior to anyone.”
A Tale of Two Nations
Born in the Philippines and raised in Tokyo, Saso’s multicultural background has significantly influenced her golfing career. She honed her skills in the Philippines and achieved her first tournament championship at the age of 19 in June 2021. Representing the Philippines, she competed in the Tokyo Olympics the same year. Post-Olympics, she embraced her Japanese heritage by obtaining Japanese nationality.
A Win for Her Parents
Reflecting on her victories, Saso expressed deep gratitude towards her parents. Her 2021 championship win was a tribute to her mother and her Philippine roots. This year, representing Japan, she dedicated her victory to her father. “In the championship win in 2021, I feel I could reward my mother as a player representing the Philippines,” Saso said. “This year, I can represent Japan, and so I feel I could reward my father.”
Looking Ahead
At just 22 years old, Yuka Saso’s future in golf looks incredibly promising. With her unwavering determination and the support of her parents, she is poised to achieve even greater heights in her career, continually honoring her dual heritage through her accomplishments on the golf course.
